During this Christmas season, I was especially moved by yet another glimpse of the Humility of our Mighty God and Savior. It would seem a contradiction of terms, a mismatched pair - Omnipotence and Humility; yet, the character of our Lord Jesus Christ proves the reality of such coexistence.

Travel with me back in time to the very beginning and to the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Do you remember the gracious and merciful promise of the Redeemer that was given to the first couple in Genesis 3:15: "It (the seed of woman or Messiah) shall bruise thy (the serpent's) head, and thou (the serpent) shall bruise his (Messiah's) heel."

Contained in the first book of the Pentateuch and authored by Moses, this story was, undoubtedly, retold countless times throughout Jewish history. As decades unfolded into centuries and centuries into millennia, to whom would God speak and share the exact location as to the Birthplace of this long-awaited Messiah?

To trace such a revelation is a much-needed lesson for all believers who are called and predestined to be conformed to His image. Would a prestigious king of Israel, like David, a man after God's own heart, be told so great a secret hidden since the foundation of the world? After all, this Messiah was to be the Eternal King and final extension of the Davidic throne. What about David's son, Solomon, builder of the unrivaled glorious temple of Jehovah? If not Israeli kings, the surely, some great religious figure or High Priest would be privy to such valuable information as to the whereabouts of His birth. Yet, during a span of approximately 3,300 years, none of these was chosen as the oracle of such prophetic specificity. Who, then, would God choose as His mouthpiece in declaring the geographic location of His Incarnate Entrance into human history? The answer is heartwarming and offers us unique insight into the Nature of this Great and Awesome God, for He whispered the secret to a peasant farmer named Micah: "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." (Micah 5:2)

Micah-a common working man-a poor farmer, not unlike many of us, yet the recipient of prophecy hidden from the greatest of sages. I believe that Micah's impoverished physical estate speaks to our present and constant need for recognition of our own "poorness" of spirit--IF we, too, are to hear from this God of omnipotence and humility. In fact, I am convinced that the Humility of Jesus Christ actively seeks out any humble believer for sweet communion and that, by His Grace, He is daily conforming us to that precious Humility that is uniquely in His image. Micah was convinced of this, too, for in Chapter 6, verse 8 this "minor" prophet summarizes: "He (God) hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly-and to love mercy, and to walk HUMBLY with thy God?"

Amazing isn't it!? King Jesus-The Great Potentate-Possessor of Heaven and Earth humbled Himself to be born for me and, ultimately, to die for me. However, even more amazing is the undeniable promise and fact that He has made His children partakers of such precious Divine Nature! Who wouldn't want to serve a King like that?
